Ancient OlympiaThe cradle of the global civilization
The site is famous for being the birthplace of the Olympic Games, held every four years from the 8th century BC to the 4th AD.
The sanctuary of Ancient Olympia, one of the most significant sanctuaries dedicated to God Zeus, was a center of religious and athletic activities where athletes would travel for weeks to participate in the Games.
The centerpiece of Zeus’s most magnificent sanctuary was the 13.5m-tall gold and ivory statue, dedicated to the king of the gods and created by master craftsman Pheidias. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the statue no longer exists. Still, you will appreciate its scale by visiting, and you will be able to admire other famous artifacts firsthand, such as the statue of Hermes by Praxiteles.
The eternal flame of the Olympic spirit still brightens in Olympia as the ritual of its Lightning takes place at the archaeological site, and from here, the runners run all over the world carrying the message to stop any war fight as the Olympic Games are about to start and inviting all athletes to take part.
